Trigger Choice and Technical Questions
I don't see a grip or brand listed. What trigger will best fit? Am I choosing the correct trigger?
We plan to expand our lineup of triggers to include all major manufacturers as fast as we can without sacrificing quality. If you have questions about a grip or brand not listed on the website, please check the compatibility list here: Compatibility Guide
If you still have questions after reading the FAQ and compatibility list, feel free to email customerservice@reddirt-usa.com.Are Red Dirt USA triggers "drop in"?
Red Dirt USA always strives for the best fit trigger with minimal user fitting while knowing that true “drop in” status does not coexist with great performance and fit. Which is why we cannot guarantee any trigger will be “drop in”.
Red Dirt USA triggers offer a custom fit feel for a variety of brands and dimensions. We have the goal of minimizing the “one size sold, you make it work” fitting frustrations that retail customers and builders alike encounter. Fitting being needed is always a possibility and becomes more likely as different parts, grips, and frames are combined in a build or as the platform is tuned towards maximum performance.
Does a Red Dirt USA trigger reduce pull weight?
Changing the trigger shoe and bow on a double stack 1911 does not in general greatly affect the weight of the trigger pull. The ignition system and other parts (e.g. hammer, sear, disconnector, mainspring, series 80 safety) work together with a well fitted shoe and bow to give a great trigger press and the desired weight.
Red Dirt USA triggers provide a length of pull suited to the user, a trigger assembly well fitted for specific grip, and our patented solid milled one piece design with easy pre-travel adjustment. These features help in acquiring a preferred experience and give the trigger a more firm and rigid feel without changing/tuning the ignition parts.
When a firearm has tuned ignition parts, our triggers make sure the user can get the best performance out of a double stack 1911!
How do I know what length of trigger to choose?
We have a helpful trigger length guide that will get you dialed into the length of trigger that should work for you. Click here: trigger length guide
Measured to the center of the trigger, OEM triggers for many guns are usually around length 3 (e.g. Staccato, Prodigy, Girsan)
Some OEM triggers are closer to our length 4 or 5 (e.g. Kimber 2k11, MAC, AF Romulus)
Based on how you like the reach of the OEM trigger you can decide if you wish to go longer, shorter, or similar to OEM.
This is just a generalized guideline and personal preference will play a large role though, so if you know what you like no worries if it is not what the guideline says.
In case you are not satisfied with your choice, we accept returns of unmarred and unmodified triggers purchased within the last 30 days.
Do the Red Dirt USA ST Triggers work in a single stack 1911?
No, our triggers are designed for double stack 1911s. Yes, there are plans to offer a single stack model in 2026.
I want or need more set screws. How can I acquire more?
If you need or want extra set screws we have an accessory kit here: st trigger accessory kit
The pre-travel screw that comes installed is a 4-48 x 3/32″ screw.
The over travel screw will also be 4-48 threads, 3/16″ or 1/4″ length.
Installation and Troubleshooting
Why does my trigger not drop in or function after installation?
Red Dirt USA always strives for the best fit trigger with minimal user fitting while knowing that true “drop in” status does not coexist with great performance and fit. Which is why we cannot guarantee any trigger will be “drop in”.

How do I make the trigger shoe fit into grip shoe track, it appears to be too tall?
Most of our triggers usually do not need any fitting of the shoe when being installed into the OEM specific grip the trigger was made for. That said, tolerances do vary and slight polish or fitting of the shoe being needed is always a possibility!
Our Cheely and Phoenix Trinity triggers are the biggest exception to this. Grip users of these brands are often looking for a custom fit and feel on such a premium priced grip and our triggers reflect that status. The tolerances on these grips are very tight but do vary. The shoes may need .001″-.002″ of material removal or polish on the top of the shoe.
No matter the grip or trigger, the process would be the same. Usually 500 grit sandpaper or similar, firmly attached to a flat and level surface, does the job well when paired with a patient and steady hand. Just enough material should be removed in a level manner to where the trigger freely falls into the trigger track with no binding for that particular grip. We always suggest to employ the services of a skilled 1911 gunsmith when in doubt.

Why does my grip safety not work after replacing my trigger?
The first step to troubleshooting is to completely remove the pre and over travel set screws in the bow and shoe of the trigger.
Too little pre-travel may not give the grip safety tang enough room to reset and properly clear the rear of the trigger bow.
Click here for a great video detailing the grip safety tang and trigger bow interaction.
If the grip safety tang is riding on top of the trigger bow when you have the pre-travel at the desired setting then either more pre-travel will have to be allowed or the bow / grip safety tang may need to be fitted when less pre-travel is set. We always recommend consulting a skilled 1911 gunsmith when fitting such parts on the firearm.
How do I fix the trigger not moving or locking up when I attach the frame to the grip?
Our series 200 bows that are used on many of our triggers have raised fitting tabs on the sides of the bow. These tabs make sure the back of the bow does not have excessive up and down movement. If you are using our Cheely, Kimber, CS Staccato, or MAC/Tisas trigger and are having this problem, these fitting tabs would be the first place to look.

Some frames may sit low enough that when tightening the grip screws the frame is pushing down on those tabs and locking up the trigger bow. Light filing will quickly relieve any binding and while still giving a perfect fit with no vertical bow movement.
This problem will not present on every firearm. The tabs are there to be filed if a particular frame is too tight though.
How do I fix my fiream having "hammer follow" or the hammer not locking back?
The first step to troubleshooting is to completely remove the pre and over travel set screws in the bow and shoe of the trigger.
The pre-travel being set too aggressive can put pressure on the sear even when the trigger is at rest, causing safety and function issues. Around .03″ of pre-travel is usually cited as the minimum safe amount in manuals.
The left hand of the sear spring controls the pressure on the sear to capture the hammer. Please double and triple check this spring is installed correctly. This spring laying incorrectly behind or on top of the sear and disconnector assembly can cause many issues, including failure of the sear to capture the hammer.
If the sear spring is installed correctly then the solution can be as simple as applying more pressures to the sear by giving the left hand a slightly more forward bend. Changing parts on the 1911 platform can sometimes require the sear spring be retuned in such a manner.
A firearm exhibiting hammer follow should never be used in live fire until the problem is resolved. We always suggest to employ the services of a skilled 1911 gunsmith when in doubt.
